The Internet of Things (IoT) has become an integral part of our everyday lives. Intelligent door locks, intelligent heating systems or fully automated control of all electronic devices in the house are already almost standard in new buildings. Often, these full-scale home automation systems are complex and cannot really be fully understood by the end user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A major problem is that many IoT devices often cannot be directly secured against attacks. In these cases, one can place a protective layer around the affected equipment. Like an onion, this can consist of different layers, depending on the application and safety requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a variety of possible usage scenarios for this approach. For example, one of the layers can be used to monitor all communication with the outside world. Another layer can apply special rules to prevent any negative impact on the privacy of user data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our project, we are investigating how different layers of security can help to eliminate prevailing security and privacy problems in the “smart home” domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A major focus of our project are solutions that can be retrofit to existing implementations. Furthermore, the solution should meet regulatory requirements to protect critical personal data.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
